The new president of the European Leagues, Claudius Schafer, says that “fears for the future” of national competitions due to the distortion created by the awards in the money of international tournaments.
On Wednesday, the FIFA world governing agency announced the awards money of $ 1 billion (£ 780 million) for the Club World Cup of 32 teams this summer in the United States.
Royal rates will increase depending on the performance in the tournament, which will probably benefit the 12 European clubs. The nine most parts in the betting markets are from Europe, with the Red Bull Salzburg of Austria, the only European team that is not favored to reach the last 16.
While FIFA has said that it will provide $ 200 million (£ 155 million) to European football in solidarity payments for non -participating clubs, exactly where this money will be explained.
However, Schafer suggested that the aspect of solidarity was largely irrelevant, and expressed concerns about the impact of substantial awards money on the competitive balance in “smaller and medium leagues.”
“When you see that money is paid to those who participate in the competition this summer, it is huge,” he said.
“If an Austrian league club gets $ 50 million, that has a great influence on [that] league.
“Competitive balance is one of the most important topics for a league.
“The smallest and medium leagues have had very good discussions about solidarity, but we have to be honest: it is a small portion if a club participates in international competition. I fear that the future is honest.”
The leagues throughout Europe are fighting with the theme of the domain of a small number of clubs, including England, where Manchester City won a fourth consecutive title unprecedented in a row last season.
It is 2004, since a club that was not Real Madrid, Barcelona or Atlético de Madrid won the League of Spain, Juventus assured nine consecutive titles of Serie A in Italy until 2020, while Bayern Munich seems to claim his Bundesliga crown this term after Bayer Leverkusen finished his trace of 11 season in Germany.
In other places, Paris St-Germain seems certain that it will reach 12 titles in 14 years in France, while Red Bull Salzburg won 10 Austrian titles in a row at 2024.
“We have to reach some conclusions,” said Schafer.
The inauguration of the inaugural Club World Cup begins on June 14 and ends with the final in New Jersey on July 13.
