From Thor to Kratos — A Franchise Favorite Steps into a New Role
In the upcoming Prime Video series, Hurst steps into the shoes of Kratos, the fierce warrior also known as the Ghost of Sparta. The choice reflects his deep connection to the franchise and his experience portraying complex, intense characters in both television and video games.
Producers are adapting the narrative established in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, focusing on Kratos’ life after renouncing his past and the emotionally charged journey he shares with his son, Atreus.
According to the official story setup, the series will depict:
Kratos and Atreus embark on a quest to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus works to teach his father to be a better human.
This father-son dynamic, central to the games’ narrative, is expected to bring emotional weight and depth to the live-action adaptation.
Production, Showrunner & Creative Team
The God of War series is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios, Sony Pictures Television, and PlayStation Productions, and has been ordered for two seasons. Pre-production is underway in Vancouver, with filming planned to begin soon.
Veteran TV writer and producer Ronald D. Moore — known for his work on Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind — serves as showrunner and executive producer, bringing a blend of character focus and mythic scope to the project.
Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye is attached to direct the first episodes, signaling a high-quality cinematic approach for the series.
Fan Response and Expectations
Fans have responded with excitement and curiosity to the casting news, particularly given Hurst’s previous involvement in the franchise and his strong presence in both television and video game roles. Conversations online have highlighted the unexpected but fitting choice of an actor already familiar with the God of War universe.
While an official release date has not yet been announced, the series is widely expected to debut in 2027 or later, following the completion of principal photography and post-production.
