Final Fantasy VII Remake on PS5 & PC Gets Major Update Ahead of Switch 2 & Xbox Launch

Square Enix has announced a free, substantial update for Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on PlayStation 5 and PC, timed to coincide with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S versions of the game. This update arrives just before the multi-platform launch on January 22, 2026, giving existing players enhanced options and streamlined progression features previously highlighted for the new ports.

New Streamlined Progression Features for All Platforms

The upcoming patch adds a suite of optional gameplay features designed to make the experience more accessible or flexible for different playstyles. Dubbed Streamlined Progression, the new tools let players:

  • Start with maximum HP and MP, reducing early-game difficulty.

  • Deal 9,999 damage to enemies for faster combat progression.

  • Carry the maximum number of items, easing resource constraints.

These options were originally announced as part of the Switch 2 and Xbox editions’ features, but Square Enix has confirmed they will be integrated into the current PS5 and PC versions on the same day those platforms launch — January 22, 2026.

A Unified Launch Across Platforms

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade originally launched on PlayStation platforms in 2020, then arrived on PS5 and PC with graphical enhancements and the Episode INTERmission DLC. Now, with the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S ports joining the lineup next week, Square Enix is aligning the versions so players can enjoy similar quality-of-life features regardless of platform.

The Switch 2 and Xbox versions also include the option to try a demo of the opening chapter, with save data carrying over to the full release.

Community Anticipation & Discussion

Fans have shown a mix of excitement and debate around the new Streamlined Progression features. Some see the extremely accessible options—like max stats and huge damage output—as a way to focus on story and exploration, while others worry these modes could trivialize core combat challenges.

Regardless, the timing of this update just ahead of the Switch 2 and Xbox Series launches emphasizes Square Enix’s push for a multi-platform experience for one of the most influential RPGs of recent years.
