Stoney, who won 130 caps for England and captained Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games, had been in charge of San Diego Wave for almost three years after renouncing as Manchester United’s manager in 2021.
The NWSL club was a new franchise when it became a chief coach and took them to third place and then first during the first two seasons.
They arrived twice at the semifinals of the season’s play-offs, which crown the league champions, but their third season had not continued with the same trajectory with only three victories after 14 games.
She saw work as a long -term project. He had experienced a painful spell apart from his partner, Megan, and three children, the twins Teddy and Tilly and the youngest child Willow, when he first moved to the United States, but finally solved their visa problems, allowing them to meet and establish their family home in California.
“He took 22 months to get them out, we were 22 months apart, we weren’t even out there for a year [together] And I lost my work, “she says.
“If I’m honest, I didn’t think my job deserved either, so that made it even more difficult, with the successes we had, we just had a little dip. It was not even important.
“Then, to be treated that way, after everything that had been done and sacrificed and everything that had been achieved, it was very difficult to swallow on a personal level, but it was more what happened to my family.
“I have three young children, they had nine and six at that time, they did not have a home. So, for me, it is inexcusable to make a family.”
The day they were supposed to return to school in August in San Diego after their summer vacation, and left, so Stoney faced home education.
It was a period that she describes as “one of the most difficult moments of my life.”
She says: “He asked me questions if I wanted to stay in the game because if the game I chew and spits you like this, after everything we had sacrificed to be there, and after what I had achieved in a short space of time, and what we had achieved as a club, made me question the game.
“I got offers quite fast after the announcement and said not everyone, whether they were right or wrong, because I wanted to take time. I needed to make sure to solve our lives.
“My priority was my family [and] How do we return to San Diego? “
