Amber Whiteley: The woman who takes Liverpool through the key period

Beard enjoyed great success with Liverpool in two spells with the club, for the first time in the consecutive WSL titles, before supervising its second level promotion in 2022.

But with the seventh and nine points on Crystal Palace on the lower side, the club made the bold decision to separate last week.

Liverpool felt that they could not afford to stagnate the clubs in the WSL that grow more and more and Whiteley had the perfect beginning with a 1-0 victory over the palace.

She admits that it is now an “important period” for Liverpool as they approach a crossroads, uncertain about what the future will be.

“We have been a little stopped so far. It is important for us to build some consistency and end the season with force,” Whiteley said.

“It is important to give us a platform to work. It is also important for fans. We want to produce football that they enjoy seeing and want to support.

“I think we can do that in the coming months. There is a lot to play.”

The Liverpool recruitment process is already underway, since they seek to appoint a permanent manager, but Whiteley said “he will throw his name into the hat.”

She has risen the ranks in Liverpool and previously was the chief coach of those under 21, before her first interim spell in charge in 2021.

She hopes to return to temporary charges until the end of the season, but could Whiteley follow the steps of Sunday’s opponent Renee Slegers, who demonstrated her value in an interim spell in Arsenal before they offered permanent work?

“It is definitely a role that interests me and I will take care. But that recruitment process goes to the side and I have to focus on a day -to -day basis,” Whiteley said.

“Since my provisional period previously, the most important thing I removed was that I was able to do the job.

“I’m in a much better position after having time with Matt [Beard] and working under him.

“When these opportunities arise, you have to get up and show exactly what you are capable. It is really important to do it as a female coach too.”
