Broncos interested in extending Wr Courtland Sutton beyond 2025

Indianapolis-The main soccer decision makers of the Denver Broncos, coach Sean Payton and General Manager George Paton, made clear in the NFL combines on Tuesday that the open receiver Courtland Sutton is in the team’s plans beyond 2025, the last season of his current contract.

“Courtland is one of our boys, team captain, I have said a couple of years in a row, we want it here,” Paton said in Lucas Oil Stadium. “These discussions will happen at the right time.”

Sutton was an important part of the Broncos offensive last season and was crucial in the development of the rookie field marshal Bo Nix, leading Denver at receptions (81), receiving yards (1,081) and Touchdowns (eight). These figures exceeded any other bronco, since the 29 -year -old Sutton ended with 40 more receptions, 578 more receptors and two touchdowns more than the best width broncos receiver.

The chemistry between Sutton and Nix has been clear, since Sutton has been one of NIX’s most vowel supporters as a team leader. Nix has accredited Sutton for playing an important role in his transition from the rookie field marshal who did not have a touchdown pass until week 4 to the player whose 29 TouchDown passes were the second more for a rookie in the history of the NFL.

The importance of Sutton for Nix, to whom the Broncos believe that it is their long -term solution in the quarterback, places the status of the receiver’s contract near the top of the list of tasks pending Denver. It is just a matter of time, according to Payton and Paton.

“We feel he had a very good season,” Payton said. “It’s important for what we are doing.”

He was also the player who did not trust virtually all situations. Sutton was tied in the 21st position in the league at a tight window receptions, where the closest defender is less than a courtyard in the capture, and was the only bronchos player among the 90s best in the league in the category. It also ended with 135 objectives, 65 more than player No. 2 of the Broncos (Javonte Williams Corridor) and 80 more than the next highest open receptor of the Broncos (Devaughn Vele).

Sutton is scheduled to win a base salary of $ 13.5 million in the next season. According to sources familiar with the situation, the Broncos are aware that Sutton would prefer not to play the 2025 season in their current agreement.

Sutton, a second round of the Broncos in 2018, is the second most dyed bronco behind the offensive Tackle Garett Bolles, who was Denver’s first round in 2017. Sutton said last season that Denver “is the place where I want to be able to withdraw.”

Paton said that Sutton’s agent Jacob Presser will be among those who speak informally this week, but those substantive discussions about an extension would occur later. Payton added that “all that will happen on time [with Sutton] And I don’t think it’s now the right time. “

Sutton remained away from the Los Broncos low season program The last spring, including each Ota session, while trying to obtain a new agreement, but attended the mandatory mini -team of the team in June and reported in time for the training camp. He also organized training at the Southern Methodist University, his Alma Mater, for Quarterbacks and many of the players of the skill position in the weeks prior to the training camp.

There were some controversial moments in the discussions among the Broncos, who fought with $ 84 million of dead money against their limit in 2024, and the representatives of Sutton. The Broncos did not add any new money guaranteed to the Sutton Agreement, but served $ 11.79 million of their base salary scheduled for the 2024 season in a signature bonus that received immediately after the agreement.

The Broncos added some performance incentives for last season, as well as for the 2025 season. Those included separate bonds of $ 500,000 that Sutton won in 2024 for winning 500, 750 and 1,065 reception yards, respectively.

Some in the League believe that the Broncos could take a look at some of the high profile receptors in the free agency, a list that could include the Tee Higgins of the Bengals provided that the Bengals are not franchiseed with the 26 -year -old player. It is not clear if a significant firm of free agent would affect the conversations with Sutton, who is the main receiver X, or at the divided end, in the offensive of the Broncos.

Sutton was usually aligned in the X as the receiver on the opposite side of the formation from the closed end. The Z receiver, which usually plays on the same side of the formation as the closed wing is often used in the movement prior to the SNAP movement, was mainly filled by Marvin Mims Jr., a second round selection in 2023, and Troy Franklin, a fourth roller in 2024.

Payton said Tuesday that he liked how Mims closed the season, and also Franklin’s potential to continue working with Sutton.

“We see [Franklin] As Z. We move our boys a bit, so it is not exclusive, “Payton said.” But he thought he had a good rookie year. Sometimes it is in that same position that Mims is, so we have two guys certainly: we have become faster because those guys can run.

“We saw that growth sprout with Marvin in the year 2. But I would say that I was very happy with how [Franklin] He handled the entire rookie season. “
