India 133 for 3 (Abhishek 79, Samson 26, Archer 2-21) won England 132 (Buttler 68, Varun 3-23, Arshdeep 2-17) by seven wickets
When Buttler departed in the 17th over, he had provided 68 for 109 on the board, with Harry Brook the only batsman to reach double figures before Jofra Archer bowled 12 off No. 9.
Brook’s 17 were part of a 48 stand with Buttler, the vice-captain and captain undertaking a rebuild finished by Varun’s googlies. The 33-year-old bowled Brook and Liam Livingstone in the space of three deliveries to turn that into rubble. His third was Buttler, holing out to deep square leg.
Whatever little danger there was in the chase was limited to only the fifth, when Archer eliminated both. Sanju Samson, who had run early, and Surayakumar for a duck off four deliveries. Archer, who bowled all four of his overs on the bounce having opened the innings, was comfortably the pick of the England bowlers with 2 for 21.
That simply put the onus on Abhishek, who was bowled by Adil Rashid on 29 off 16. The left-hander would recover his half-century just four balls later.
Although Rashid finally got his man, India had virtually established a 1-0 lead in this five-match series. A four by Tilak Varma off the bounce of Mark Wood on the penultimate ball of the 13th over confirmed it.
