Final Fantasy 14 Evercold: Switch 2 Release Date and New Job Revealed
Final Fantasy 14 just had one of its biggest news dumps of the year, and if you’ve been holding off on jumping into the MMO until it lands on Nintendo’s newest hardware, the wait is almost over. Square Enix confirmed the Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV will launch on August 4, with pre-orders already open.
That announcement came alongside a much bigger reveal: Evercold, the sixth expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, dropped a new extended teaser and a wave of details during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin. Evercold is the patch 8.0 expansion, due out in January 2027. That gives players about half a year of runway before it lands, but Square Enix clearly isn’t waiting until launch to start hyping it up.
What’s new in the Switch 2 version
Here’s the thing to know before you pre-order: the Switch 2 version will require its own separate monthly subscription from the other platform versions, and it won’t require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. That’s a relief if you were worried about stacking subscription costs. And if you’re already paying for FFXIV on PS5, Xbox, or PC, you can get a 50 percent discount on the Switch 2 version’s subscription fee.

Bastion: the new tank job
During the Berlin keynote, Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) revealed the first new job coming with Evercold. Bastion is a main tank who wields a pair of greatshields known as skyltborg, and Square Enix showed off a trailer demonstrating the job in action. Tank mains have been asking for something visually distinct for a while, and dual greatshields is about as distinct as it gets.
Beyond Bastion, there’s more coming down the pipe. Evercold will introduce a level cap increase from 100 to 110, along with a second new job — a physical ranged DPS — that hasn’t had its full kit detailed yet.
A frozen new realm, and a story shift
The expansion’s setting sounds like a genuine tonal shift for the game. Evercold sends players to the Fourth Reflection, a realm that’s been taken over by ice, where the population has fled to the skies on massive airships called Realmships. If you’ve been craving a change of scenery after Dawntrail’s more tropical vibe, this is about as far from that as you can get.
Square Enix is also promising structural changes behind the scenes. Evercold introduces a redesigned framework for earning rewards and increasing item level, letting players switch between Reborn Mode, based on the current combat system, and Evolved Mode, designed to highlight each job’s unique identity.
The Final Fantasy 7 crossover you didn’t see coming
Here’s the part that had fans doing a double take. Square Enix confirmed a new 8-player raid series titled “Beyond the Lifestream,” a crossover with the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. It’s a natural tie-in — if you’ve been following the twists and turns of Yoshi-P’s comments on a potential Final Fantasy 6 remake, it’s clear Square Enix is leaning hard into cross-promoting its FF7 Remake trilogy while that project wraps up.
There’s also lighter content in the mix. A typing minigame called Keybound Brawler, inspired by FF7 Remake’s Gold Saucer, launches October 28 and lets players earn Barret and Tifa costumes.
Quality of life updates worth knowing about
Not everything is expansion locked. Chocobo companions are getting an overhaul, along with the ability to summon your chocobo to help out in dungeons, starting with patch 8.1. That’s a nice touch for solo players and anyone tired of leaving their loyal bird at the stable.
If Square Enix’s approach to Evercold feels ambitious, it fits a pattern — the company is clearly willing to commit serious resources to projects it believes in, even as it stays cautious elsewhere. Compare that to how Dragon Age’s own producer describes EA’s reluctance to greenlight new projects, and the contrast in publisher philosophy becomes pretty stark.
Whether you’re a longtime Warrior of Light or someone waiting for the Switch 2 version to finally jump in, Evercold looks like one of FFXIV’s most ambitious expansions yet — new job, new realm, a level cap bump, and an FF7 crossover raid all in one package. August 4 gets you into the game on Switch 2; January 2027 gets you the full expansion.
