Halo Campaign Evolved: Everything You Need to Know Before the July 28 Launch.
Halo Campaign Evolved is almost here — and if you haven’t been following the story, you’ve got a lot to catch up on before July 28 arrives.
This isn’t just a remaster. It’s a full ground-up remake of one of the most important shooters ever made — rebuilt completely in Unreal Engine 5, arriving on PlayStation for the first time in the franchise’s history, and packed with new content that wasn’t in the original 2001 game. Early access already opened yesterday for Premium Edition buyers, and the reviews are in.
Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is Halo Campaign Evolved?
Let’s be clear about what this is before anything else.
Halo Campaign Evolved is a full remake — not a remaster — of Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign. Unlike 2011’s Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, which was a graphical pass over the original engine, Campaign Evolved rebuilds the entire thing from scratch: new geometry, new lighting, redesigned encounters, modern movement mechanics including sprint and clamber, re-recorded voice acting, and a new music suite.
Twenty-five years after Master Chief first stepped off the Pillar of Autumn onto the Halo ring, Halo Studios rebuilt the whole thing. Every level. Every cutscene. Every piece of dialogue. That’s the scale of what we’re talking about.
Halo Campaign Evolved is developed by Halo Studios in Unreal Engine 5 and begins early access on July 23 at 8 AM PDT for Premium Edition and Collector’s Edition owners. The global launch for everyone else follows on July 28.
Release Date and Platform Details
Halo Campaign Evolved launches globally on July 28, 2026 at 8 AM PDT. It is available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC via the Xbox Store and Steam, and PlayStation 5 — the first time in the series’ history that a mainline Halo campaign has released on a PlayStation console.
The game is also included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass at no additional charge from day one.
Early access began July 23 for Premium Edition and Collector’s Edition owners — up to five days early.
Editions and Pricing
| Edition | Price | What’s Included |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $49.99 | Base game + Operation: METEORITE |
| Premium Edition | ~$59.99–$69.99 | Game + Alpha Halo Armory Pack + Digital Artbook + Digital Short Story + 5 days early access |
| Collector’s Edition | $199.99 | Everything above + physical collectibles |
Operation: METEORITE comes with every edition of the game rather than serving as Premium Edition DLC. That’s a meaningful detail — the new story missions aren’t locked behind a paywall.
What’s Actually New — Key Additions
Operation: METEORITE — Brand New Story Missions
This is the biggest addition and the one most worth talking about.
Operation: METEORITE is a new three-mission story arc that takes place a year before the events of the first game. Featuring the Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson, this new adventure sends players behind enemy lines in a clandestine UNSC operation aboard a Covenant research vessel. What starts as a simple smash and grab turns more complicated as they encounter more than they bargained for.
Three entirely new missions. New environments. New enemy variants. New weapons from across the Halo series. And the kind of Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson character content that fans have wanted for decades.

Full UE5 Rebuild
Halo Studios rebuilt the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign in Unreal Engine 5 — new geometry, new lighting, redesigned encounters, re-recorded voice acting, and a new music suite.
This is genuinely impressive work. The original ran on Xbox hardware from 2001. Rebuilding every asset, every level, every audio cue for Unreal Engine 5 is not a small undertaking.
Modern Movement Mechanics
Sprint. Clamber. Features that didn’t exist in the original Halo — now they’re in. Early reviews are mixed on this. Some love the modernization. Others feel it slightly breaks the original game’s combat pacing. A skull collectible that disables sprint entirely exists for purists who want the classic feel.
Expanded Arsenal
A broader arsenal of weapons, vehicles, enemies, and gameplay-modifying Skulls — optional modifiers that change combat in fun and challenging ways — add fresh tactics and endless replayability.
4-Player Online Co-op
Play solo, in 2-player split-screen co-op on console, or up to 4-player online co-op with full crossplay and cross-progression support.
The original Halo was 2-player split-screen only. 4-player online co-op with crossplay across Xbox, PC, and PS5 is a significant upgrade.
The PS5 Situation — Why This Matters

This marks Master Chief’s first appearance in a Halo game released for a PlayStation console. That alone makes this more than a routine anniversary release.
Halo has been an Xbox franchise since 2001. It defined what Xbox was. The fact that Master Chief is launching on PS5 on day one — same day as Xbox — is a seismic shift in how Microsoft approaches platform exclusivity. It’s not a surprise given recent Xbox strategy but seeing it actually happen with Halo specifically is still a moment worth noting.

What Are Reviews Saying?
Critics love the remake overall, with early reviews being strong. The game launches to strong reviews as Master Chief makes his PlayStation debut.
Campaign Evolved is described as the best-feeling Halo that Halo Studios has ever assembled, and by extension, one of the slickest shooters of this scale in recent history.
The main criticisms coming up repeatedly are: no competitive multiplayer at launch, some debate about whether sprint belongs in a game designed before it existed, and questions about whether the visual redesign always preserves the original’s stark aesthetic identity. But the core game? Reviewers are consistently calling it great.
Should You Buy or Play on Game Pass?
If you have Game Pass — play it free on July 28. Simple decision.
If you don’t have Game Pass — $49.99 for a full UE5 remake of one of gaming’s greatest campaigns plus three new missions is strong value. The Premium Edition’s early access perk is already active, so if you haven’t bought yet the Standard Edition at launch is the smart play.
Halo Campaign Evolved is one of the biggest gaming launches of July 2026. A full UE5 remake of an all-time classic, arriving on PlayStation for the first time ever, with three brand new story missions and 4-player online co-op. It’s on Game Pass. It launches July 28.
There’s not much more to need convincing on. This is the real deal — and early reviews agree.
