Mass Effect trilogy director Casey Hudson’s studio is closing

Humanoid Origin, the studio led by former BioWare CEO Casey Hudson, has announced its closure.

In a post on LinkedIn, the Canadian studio said it was closing due to funding issues.

“Today we informed our staff that Humanoid Origin will be closing,” it said. “Despite efforts to protect the studio from broader challenges in the industry, an unexpected funding shortfall left us unable to maintain operations.

“We are heartbroken because we will not be able to complete our new science fiction universe. However, our main concern at this time is our team and we are committed to supporting them in their transition to new employment.

“During our time together, the team made incredible progress and demonstrated that it is possible to do incredible work while fostering a culture of fun and creativity,” the statement continued. “We thank them for their talent, bravery and friendship.

“Thank you to everyone who supported us during our journey.”

Humanoid Origin was founded by Hudson and a team of gaming industry veterans in 2021. Their first game was going to be a multi-platform AAA title focused on character-driven narrative.

Spending nearly 20 years at BioWare over two stints, Hudson directed and produced the original Mass Effect trilogy and Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic. He left the company for the second time in December 2020.
