Microsoft says I could use AI to relive Xbox’s classic games

Xbox is looking to use its newly announced generative model for the preservation of classic video games, it is said.

On Wednesday, the Microsoft Games Division announced to Muse, a generative AI model that, he says, can generate “games of games, controller actions or both.”

The main demonstration of the company showed how you could generate video game images using training data of the Ninja 2020 Bleeding Edge game. However, he also discussed how Muse could help preserve classic games in the future.

“Today, innumerable classic games linked to aged hardware are no longer playable by most people,” said Fatima Kardar, a gaming AI corporate vice president. “Thanks to this advance, we are exploring the potential for Muse to take older catalog games of our studies and optimize them for any device.

“We believe that this could radically change how we preserve and experience classic games in the future and make them accessible to more players. Imagine that loved games lost for time and hardware advance could play one day on any Xbox screen is an exciting possibility for us. “

In a video posted together with the news, the Chief of Microsoft Games, Phil Spencer, also expressed optimism for the future benefit of Muse for preservation.

“You could imagine a world in which, from the data and video of the game, a model could learn games and really make them portable to any platform. I think that’s really exciting, “he said.

“We have talked about the preservation of games as an activity for us and these models and their ability to fully learn how a game plays, without the need for the original engine to run in the original hardware, I think it opens many opportunities.”

According to a memorandum of the leaked company, Xbox established a new team last year dedicated to the preservation of games and backward compatibility for its future hardware.

The president of Xbox, Sarah Bond, wrote: “We have formed a new team dedicated to the preservation of games, important for all of us in Xbox and the industry itself.

“We are based on our strong story of delivering compatibility upside down to our players, and we are still committed to presenting the incredible Xbox Games Library to enjoy the future generations of players.”
