Monster Hunter Wilds has had the greatest physical launch of any PS5 game released in Japan so far.
According to the latest sales figures of the Japanese magazine Famitsu, Monster Hunter Wilds sold 601,179 physical copies in its first week, so it does not include digital and PC sales.
While this is higher than other physical sales of PS5 games in Japan, it is lower than the previous Monster Hunter games. However, as Monster Hunter Wilds sold 8 million copies in its first three days to become the best -selling game of Capcom, these sales numbers suggest a great change towards digital sales.
In addition, the PS5 hardware itself sold 108,978 units in the base console, only digital console and PS5 Pro, with Monster Hunter Rise causing significant impulse in sales.
By way of comparison, at its Switch launch in Japan Monster Hunter Rise sold more than 1.30 million physical units at the launch, while Monster Hunter: World sold more than 1.35m physical units on PS4 in its first three days of launch in Japan (thanks Gematsu).
However, the best -selling PS5 game last year was Final Fantrath 7 with 358,353 sales for life, while in 2023 it was Final Fantasy 16 with 429,330 and in 2022 it was Gran Turismo 7 with 218,013.
As such, Monster Hunter Wilds has sold considerably more in its first week, and these numbers once again demonstrate the rapid success of the game.
At 8m copies sold worldwide, Monster Hunter Wilds has already overcome Street Fighter 5, Street Fighter 2 and Resident Evil 2 Original, according to the Platinum Titles list of Platinum by Per Capcom. In fact, it is not very far from the life of Monster Hunter Rise DLC Sunbreak, which had sold 9.4 million units in December last year.
In addition, the launch of the game in Japan has caused an increase in both PS5 rentals and in Naans cheese sales.
