Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games are cross-compatible with Switch 1, publisher claims

It is stated that the game cards for the ‘Edition’ game ports of Nintendo 2 will also work on the original Nintendo Switch.

According to the Marvelous editor, who made the claim on his frequently asked questions page for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma.

“The Nintendo Switch 2 edition is a 64 GB red card that includes, in its entirety, the Nintendo Switch game and the update package,” he says.

“There is no need to download the complete game: simply insert the card into a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 console, and the correct version will start automatically.

“Like most modern titles, there may be small updates or patches available in the launch to provide minor solutions and improvements, but you have the security: the complete game is on the game card, ready to play from day one.”

If it is true, this would mean that the Switch 2 Edition game cars would act similarly to Xbox’s smart delivery discs, automatically starting the correct version for two generations of platforms.

Nintendo previously stated that Switch 2 Edition games would contain both the Switch 1 game and their switch 2 update on the game card itself, but it was not clear if it would be executed in both systems.

VGC has asked Nintendo to comment on this story and update it when we receive an answer.

Nintendo announced its improved Switch 2 Edition lines during its direct presentation of Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this month.

While the vast majority of switch games work on Switch 2 through its backward compatibility function, each Switch 2 Edition game includes improvements on the original switching edition, such as better images or exclusive features.

So far it has been confirmed that six games have Switch 2 editions: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Kirby and The Forgotten Land, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Pokémon Legends: Za and Super Mario Party Jamboree.

The updates of the Switch 2 edition for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will be included for the members of Nintendo Switch online + Expansion Pack as part of their subscription, or can be purchased separately for those who are not at that level of subscription.
