In an unexpected slip, NBCUniversal has seemingly revealed the title of the much-anticipated sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The title, Super Mario World, appeared briefly in an official press release on the NBCUniversal website before being swiftly removed—sparking fan speculation and excitement online.

A Premature Reveal at the Upfront Showcase

The information was included in a press release for NBCUniversal’s Upfront Showcase, where the company highlighted a slate of upcoming blockbusters destined for its Peacock streaming platform. Among titles like M3GAN 2.0, Nobody 2, How to Train Your Dragon, and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, the title Super Mario World was listed—standing out to observant fans and media outlets.

Here’s the original quote before the edit:

“An exciting range of films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination were presented, including Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, Bad Guys 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Black Phone 2, HIM, The Phoenician Scheme, Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions.”

This section was later updated to remove Super Mario World, indicating the reveal was likely unintended.

Why Super Mario World Makes Sense as a Sequel Title

The title Super Mario World aligns perfectly with where the story is headed, especially following the events of the first film. In the post-credits scene of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a mysterious Yoshi egg is shown hidden beneath New York in the sewers. Just as the egg begins to crack, the screen cuts to black—followed by Yoshi’s iconic cry.

Fans of the classic SNES game Super Mario World will recall that it marked the first appearance of Yoshi. The egg and the cry seem to confirm Yoshi’s pivotal role in the sequel’s storyline.

Box Office Success Makes a Sequel Inevitable

The original film was a massive box office success, grossing $1.36 billion worldwide. It became the third highest-grossing PG-rated movie in U.S. history, trailing only Barbie in the same year and surpassing blockbusters like Frozen II, The Dark Knight, and every Star Wars film except Episode VII and VIII.

Given this level of commercial success, it’s no surprise that Nintendo and Illumination are moving forward with a sequel. Last year, both companies confirmed that a follow-up was in development and would be based on “the world of Super Mario Bros.” This phrasing now seems even more significant with the accidental reveal of the title Super Mario World.
