That warns that Trump’s tariffs will bring “significant damage” to American developers and players

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) warned that any tariffs imposed by Donald Trump’s administration will cause “significant damage” to the video game industry and players in the United States.

In a statement to Kotaku, the organization, which represents video game companies such as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, initially requested that the Trump administration “consult” with the industry in a “transparent process to avoid causing significant damage to everyday Americans.”

The tariffs, which will enter into force tomorrow, will affect the exports of Canada, China and Mexico (although the tariffs of the latter have been “arrested” and remain under review).

While the games are digital and probably exempt, tariffs, however, will affect the availability of hardware and accessories, as well as the components used to make games of PC games and hardware.

“Tariffs on video game devices and related products would affect Americans of all ages throughout the country,” the statement said.

“We urge the administration to consult with the private sector in a transparent process to avoid causing significant damage to everyday Americans one of the fastest growing entertainment sectors in the United States.”

However, as seen by Forbes, this statement was modified shortly after to read:

“Video games are one of the most popular and beloved entertainment forms for Americans of all ages.

“We hope to work with administration and congress to find ways to maintain economic growth backed by our sector.”
