Sony has released new information about its Remote Play handheld device, which has been renamed PlayStation Portal.

Previously known as Project Q, the apparatus resembles a DualSense controller with an 8-inch LCD screen in the center of it. Sony claims that the screen can display 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second.

When it launches later this year, the PlayStation Portal will cost $199.99 / €219.99 / £199.99, but it appears to only be capable of streaming games from a PS5 console.

According to a new blog post from Sony, "PlayStation Portal is the ideal device for gamers in households where they may need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house."

You can quickly switch from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal because PlayStation Portal will connect to your PS5 remotely over Wi-Fi. PlayStation Portal can use the Dualsense controller to play supported games installed on your PS5 console."

According to the description, PlayStation Portal is only a Remote Play device and will not allow access to cloud streaming of games on PlayStation Plus Premium. As a result, in order for the PlayStation Portal to function properly, players must own PS5 hardware.

Furthermore, players will not be able to use their own PS5 to stream games via PS Plus Premium and then stream them to the Portal.

Games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium's cloud streaming as well as PS VR2 games, which demand the headset, are not supported, according to Sony.

The final sentence of the blog post reiterates that "Games that must be streamed on PS5 using a PS Plus Premium membership are not compatible."
